Introduction to Hand Engraving with guest tutor and master engraver, John Cook - 2 day workshop

The course runs over 2 days with a particular focus on Jewellery design, specifically bright cutting, textures, Florentine designs, arabesque scrolls, and boarders.

We start by discussing the various gravers used in jewellery engraving and the associated equipment.  magnification, transfer techniques, work holding, turntables and associated tools You will make a square graver specifically for the size of your hand that you will be able to take away with you from the course. from sizing the graver we cover shaping it and sharpening techniques. Our first copper practice plate is used to build confidence in cutting straight and curved lines.

Our second practice plate moves on to using the flat, round and liner gravers, where we cut a flower incorporating various texturing patterns and bright cut and cap techniques. We will also introduce the wriggle cut.  and the use of liners to produce Florentine designs. Once the various gravers have been practiced we will move on to real life jewellery designs that can be used on engraving a pendant or earrings etc. . 

At the end of the course you will have built up confidence to undertake designing and engraving of your own jewellery pieces. To have established a foundation of techniques that will assist you in incorporating hand engraving into your existing unique jewellery work .

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
You don’t need to bring anything with you as we will provide all the equipment and materials needed. Everyone will have their own bench with access to all the tools required to make the piece.

Please wear long hair tied up [or bring something to do so], don’t wear open-toed shoes and keep loose-fitting clothing to a minimum.

If you need glasses to see things close up, please bring them with you. Making jewellery is fiddly!

Refreshments 

Tea and coffee are provided and there are always cakes close to hand! 

For lunch please bring your own packed lunch or there are a variety of shops nearby.
